Women of Impact Series: Meet Naomi Mwaura, Transforming Kenya’s Transportation Industry

Overview

Naomi Mwaura is the driving force behind Flone Initiative, an organization dedicated to revolutionizing Kenya’s public transportation sector. As part of our Women of Impact Series, we highlight Mwaura’s remarkable contributions to creating a safe and professional transportation industry in Kenya.

Over the past seven years, Flone Initiative, under Mwaura’s leadership, has collaborated with over 3,000 public transportation workers, 100+ stakeholders, and 1,000 women professionals to implement impactful interventions. Their annual Women and Transport Africa Conference serves as a platform for dialogue and innovation in the field.

Mwaura’s advocacy extends beyond organizational efforts. She played a pivotal role in organizing the MyDressMyChoice campaign, a movement against gender-based violence in Kenyan public transportation. Her research projects have contributed valuable insights to the understanding of gender and mobility issues in developing cities.

As a co-author of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy’s guidebook on designing streets for walking and cycling in African cities, Mwaura has been instrumental in shaping transportation policies and initiatives. Her involvement in projects like the Cairo Bus Rapid Transit Gender Plan and studies on expanding access to cycling for women further highlight her dedication to creating safe spaces for all.

Mwaura’s commitment to transforming Kenya’s transportation system and advocating for women’s safety is truly inspiring. Her work serves as a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and accessible transportation industry in Kenya. #WomenofImpactSeries #transportationindustry #inspiration
