A new chapter in accessibility begun led by the Flone Initiative in collaboration with key partners such as the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), a dedicated team embarked on a mission that would make a tangible difference.
Our goal was to conduct a thorough road accessibility audit along Waiyaki Way, a pivotal road connecting various parts of the city. Specifically, the audit focused on the section from ABC Place to the APDK Offices. This stretch isn’t just a route; it represents a lifeline for many, especially those with disabilities seeking access to essential services hosted within APDK Compound.
The audit was not a mere formality. It was a thorough assessment to evaluate the safety and accessibility challenges faced by persons with disabilities along this crucial route. All curbs, crossings, and entryways were scrutinized to ensure they met the standards for equitable access.
For the team involved, including members of the Moving Barriers Technical Working Group, it meant identifying barriers that hindered accessibility and proposing practical solutions to remove them. It was about ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical ability, could navigate the urban landscape with dignity and independence.
As the audit progressed, the team encountered challenges but also witnessed inspiring moments of progress. They saw firsthand how small adjustments—like ramp installations or tactile paving—could make a world of difference to someone’s daily life. Each barrier identified was not just an obstacle but an opportunity for positive change.
The Flone team is compiling the audit findings and recommendations, which will serve as a roadmap for future improvements and guide stakeholders toward creating a more accessible city.
Thanks to the dedication of those involved, including Flone Initiative, NCPWD, APDK, KeNHA, and the Moving Barriers Technical Working Group, the road to inclusivity was clearer and more promising than ever before.
