Recommendations to Kenya Ferry Service on Reduction of Incidences of Sexual Harassment in the Ferry

In April 2019, the Flone Initiative conducted a Baseline Assessment on Gender Mainstreaming and Safety in Public Transport Services in Mombasa. This assessment delved into the status of various public transportation systems in the city, including the Kenya ferry services, matatus, Tuk-tuks, and Boda bodas. The primary objective was to gauge the level of gender equity, safety, and inclusivity in the organization, management, and operation of these services in Mombasa. The findings revealed a disparity in how traffic, transport policies, and infrastructure catered to the mobility needs of women and men. In September, Flone Initiative held a workshop at the Chamiachi Resort, Nyali, attended by 14 Kenya Ferry Officials, where they disseminated the report findings. The report highlighted that the highest prevalence of sexual harassment incidents occurred at the Ferry, followed by matatus, Boda bodas, and Tuk-tuks, respectively. Seeking to collaborate with Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) to address the issue of harassment, Flone Initiative proposed several recommendations to the Ferry Services Management.
