New report ‘breaking barriers: promoting cycling among women in nairobi’ launched

Overview

Flone Initiative, with support from the FIA Foundation, has launched a new report titled ‘Breaking barriers: promoting cycling among women in Nairobi,’ focusing on the gender-specific factors influencing cycling uptake in the city. The study found that while Nairobi City County has made investments in non-motorized transport, particularly cycling, the usage by women remains extremely low, with only 3.1% of daily bicycle journeys made by women. Barriers to women’s cycling include socio-cultural perceptions, road safety risks, lack of security, limited infrastructure, and cycling skills. Recommendations include raising public awareness, enhancing safety measures, improving infrastructure, and providing more cycling opportunities. The report emphasizes the importance of understanding women’s experiences and challenges in transportation for building sustainable and inclusive transport systems. Sheila Watson, Deputy Director of the FIA Foundation, underscores the significance of addressing these barriers to achieve climate goals and ensure a just transition for all.

We envision a world where everyone is able to experience all freedoms of mobility.
