The 2024 Women and Transport Africa X Building Feminist Cities Conference, themed “Africa for All: Creating Inclusive Spaces for Everyone,” marked the 10th anniversary of the FLONE Initiative. The celebrations also included the unveiling of Flone’s Strategic Plan for 2024-2029. It brought together policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and grassroots leaders, the conference focused on advancing inclusive and equitable transport systems across Africa, particularly for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
The event celebrated a decade of advocacy and innovation, spotlighting persistent challenges such as low female participation in public transport, limited access to funding, and barriers to training. Stories of resilience underscored the transformative power of inclusion, with women emerging as leaders and changemakers in the sector. Opening the conference, FLONE’s Founder- Naomi Mwaura emphasized transport as the “lifeblood” of opportunity and called for urgent, collaborative action to build systems that serve all through inclusive infrastructure, supportive policies, and targeted interventions.
