The Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) was established by Gazette Notice Number 1093, dated 17 February 2017, with the mandate to oversee the development of an integrated, efficient, safe, reliable, and sustainable transport system within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area. This area encompasses Nairobi City, Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos, and Murang’a County.

NaMATA has identified five corridors with significant existing public transport usage and potential to benefit the largest number of residents. These corridors are slated to undergo a mass rapid transit (MRT) project, specifically Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). The BRT aims to provide rapid, comfortable, and cost-effective urban mobility by implementing segregated right-of-way infrastructure, operating services with speed and frequency, and focusing on excellence in marketing and customer service. Among its advantages over rail-based MRT, the BRT is expected to enhance accessibility, ensuring safe and convenient access for all users.
